My commute this morning was silent, for the most part. It was actually one of the more crowded mornings, but everyone was calm and peaceful though we were all pressed up against each other. My forearm brushed an older woman’s hair as I held on to the bar; she didn’t flinch or try to move away from me, but remained still and comfortable, leaning against the handlebar by the door. We all resigned to the necessary closeness of human contact, the fragile presence of silence and trusting one another not to violate the time on this train. No one grumbled from having their foot stepped on, or rolled their eyes when someone said “excuse me” to move through, or played their music too loud, or received incessant text messages on their phone with the sound on. Even when someone told another guy trying to squeeze on the train that another one was coming in 5 minutes and he still continued to push his way in, the crowd absorbed him. Not unwillingly, not begrudgingly, just automatically. This BART car could have ruled the world.
